The Stanley C. Israel Regional Award recognizes individuals and/or institutions who have advanced diversity in the chemical sciences and significantly stimulated or fostered activities that promote inclusiveness within the region.
The award consists of a medal and a $1,000 grant to support and further the activities for which the award was made. The award also will include funding to cover the recipient's travel expenses to the ACS Midwest regional meeting for the presentation of the award.
The 2015 awardee is Professor Mailika Jeffries-EL, from Iowa State University
Professor Malika Jeffries-EL is one of the most important promoters of diversity at Iowa State University, and one of the most valuable such advocates for diversity and inclusion in the chemical sciences across the State of Iowa and the Midwest. Her relentless and outstanding work in recruiting homegrown talent has resulted in several diverse new undergraduates, graduate students and faculty deciding to come to the Midwest, and specifically to Iowa, to pursue their careers. Realizing that ethnically diverse students and young professionals regularly face entrenched prejudices and challenges, Prof. Jeffries-EL has worked hard to build programs, open opportunities, and institutionalize good practices so that our best and most diverse young chemists are able to succeed in the job market and remain in the STEM workforce. Prof. Jeffries-EL has been a reliable leader and played enabling roles in the ISU chapter of the National Organization of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers, the ISU Black Faculty and Staff Association, the ISU Faculty and Staff Affinity Council, the Diverse Future Faculty workshop, and the ACS Women Chemist of Color. She has regularly volunteered during Science Bound visits for students and families, co-created the Chemistry Ambassadors program, and served as a mentor in the ACS Project SEED Program for High School Students at ISU, the only one of its type in the State of Iowa. Through her scientific work and recognition, Prof. Malika Jeffries-EL continues to be an outstanding role model for chemistry students at the local, regional and national levels.
Professor Jeffries-EL will receive her award during the Midwest Award banquet on Thursday evening.
